Take Two

taketwo Take Two

Take Two indeed. Time to take stock and revamp. I kept up with the four-dishes-per-month times three-recipes-each testing quest for all of three weeks. Then Reality came a knockin’, all gray-skinned and sour in the mouth, telling me that it’s just not going to work out. And, damn that Reality, I’m just not deft enough to catch him with the spray tan, or toss a chocolate into the ole pie hole to sweeten him up. I can’t mask him or change his nasty expression, only take him for what he is and go from there.

It’s not an utter defeat, though. Just a regrouping. I realize that I don’t really want to keep up with the review of so many recipes on the same dishes. I mean, how many times in one month do you want to read about the crystalline exterior of the perfect molten chocolate cake? Okay, so maybe that’s not the best example, but you get the idea.

I have learned that there were some benefits to my initial approach. Trying different versions of the same dishes helps you to:

  • develop your own recipes; and
  • evaluate those recipes you like best and therefore, whose cookbooks to buy.

So I’m not going to abandon the recipe quest altogether, just tweak it a bit. And that brings me to:

Stirring the Pot: Part Deux

In the coming weeks, you will find posts about food-related topics in my life:

  • a cooking class I took in Nice;
  • some memorable meals I ate during a recent trip to France;
  • our family decision to become members of a local farm’s CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group and how that affects our approach to meals;
  • how to make béchamel sauce and why it’s handy to know; and
  • de riguer for a cooking blog, some of my favourite recipes.

Because I still think there’s some merit to the idea of the recipe comparisons, I will pursue one recipe quest each month. Keeping it seasonal, June’s quest will be all about strawberries.

So, bite that, Reality!
